Grace was born in Bristol, England, in 1848. He began playing cricket at a young age and quickly showed his prodigious talent. He made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire at the age of 18 and soon became one of the best batsmen in the country.

In 1870, Grace made his debut for England and quickly became a vital member of the team. He was a prolific scorer, averaging over 50 runs per innings throughout his career. He was also a brilliant bowler, taking over 2,800 wickets in first-class cricket.

In addition to his cricket career, Grace was also a star footballer for Gloucestershire. He played as a goalkeeper and was known for his agility and shot-stopping abilities. He helped Gloucestershire win the FA Cup in 1877.
