Early Life and Career

Neil Fox Robert Gates was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1943. He graduated from the College of William & Mary and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. After serving in the Air Force, Gates joined the CIA in 1966.

Gates quickly rose through the ranks of the CIA, becoming Director of Central Intelligence in 1991. He served in this position until 1993, when he was replaced by George Tenet.

Return to the CIA

After leaving the CIA, Gates served as president of Texas A&M University. He returned to the CIA in 2006, when he was appointed Director of National Intelligence by President George W. Bush.

Gates served as DNI until 2009, when he was appointed Secretary of Defense by President Barack Obama. He served in this position until 2011.

Legacy

Neil Fox Robert Gates is a complex and controversial figure. He is a brilliant strategist and a skilled manager, but he is also a ruthless operator who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals.
